NGAL carries forward the foundation's longstanding interest in the United States and Estonia. Participants from each side of the partnership can find counterparts, mentors, and small-grant opportunities through the network.

Past gatherings have brought together scholars, university hosts, and diplomatic guests, including remarks from Estonia's Ambassador to the United States, Marina Kaljurand, on the value of people-to-people exchange.

Network Globally, Act Locally is the name given to an effort that links scholars, alumni, and partners across borders so that conversations begun in one place can grow into practical projects in another. The idea is simple: talented students gain far more from their exchange experiences when those experiences do not end at the airport on the way home, but instead continue as long-term relationships with peers who share a common desire to learn and to contribute. NGAL exists to make those relationships durable, supported, and useful well beyond a single semester abroad.

The platform gathers people who have taken part in the foundation's international scholarship programs, along with the host institutions and visiting lecturers who welcomed them, and gives them a shared space to keep working together once they have returned to their home communities. Events hosted in cities such as Charleston bring these networks into the same room for working sessions, talks, and informal exchange, so that ideas can be tested against local realities. In this way, a lecture delivered in one country can quickly become a pilot project or a student-led initiative somewhere else entirely, with alumni acting as bridges between regions and disciplines.

At its heart, NGAL reflects the foundation's wider belief that academic opportunity is most meaningful when it is paired with a sense of responsibility to the communities that surround each scholar. By nurturing connections between former students, current cohorts, and partner organizations, the initiative helps ensure that the insights gained abroad do not remain abstract but feed into mentoring, civic engagement, and practical collaboration at home.
